Retro Redux

The accompanying slides are examples of computer manipulations of the banal iconography of 50’s advertising. These visual cuplets represent a subversion of intent and usurpation of purpose that is both unsettling and provocative. They reconstruct a sentimental view into a more determined exploration of the intersection of nostalgia and race. The challenge for the viewer is to see beyond the periphery of the “American Dream” and embrace the complicated affair that exists at the edge of nostalgia and pragmatism.
